Hi spencer!, it is great for us to have you here :) good surf at home recently?
Just been busy with a new project, Myself and Aka Lyman opened a shop called Hidentity, right down the road from Sandys
Wow, great thing :)) For the young generation, can you explain how you came to bodyboard?
I grew up near the ocean, my passion started the first time i caught a wave around the age of 5 or 6, my mother used to take me to the beach right as i learned how to swim, she would push me into waves, i was hooked after that.
For you, what has changed the most in 15 years in hawaii?
The amount of people on the north shore, it's a totally different place and vibe.
In the last riptide magazine (issue#199) , B.Player said bodyboard this year seemed to be more accepted at pipe, do you agree with that?
It's may be due to the fact that there were fewer bodyboarders than previous seasons?
Yeah I'd agree, there were much less bodyboarders in the lineups this year, so less friction for sure
You are considered as a legend in Europe and Australia for almost 20 years, at the last pipe comp you showed everyone that you were riding better than ever; do you still surf as much as when you were 20 or do you ride only in good conditions today?
I definitely don't surf as much as I used to, work and now the shop are consuming lots of time, but I'll still get out there when it's good, I'm a lot more selective of my time in the water, the better the conditions are the more likely I'll be out there.
Wich regard do you have on the new hawaiian generation in bodyboarding like Keahi Parker?
Keahi is one of the guys pushing the younger crew, he charges, I've been most impressed with guys like Keahi Parker, Tanner Mcdaniel, and Matt Holtzman out at pipe.
You have a deal with manta for several years now, can you describe us your quiver? Which template and core do you surf in the big waves and small conditions?
I've been using the same shape for the past 10 years, the only thing I changed was the thickness, I like my boards a little more buoyant; they feel a little faster to me, PP single stringer bat tail.
Your worst and best memory in bodyboarding for the last 10 years?
My worst memory was breaking my ankle on a shitty day at waimea bay back in 2001 a month before the pipe event. Watching that contest was the hardest thing ever, the waves were perfect.
My best memory is the day my wife and I got married at keiki beach, all the days I shared uncrowded pipe during late season swells is up on the list of good memories as well
Some projects or travels soon?
Right now the main project is Hidentity Surf, check us out on instagram @hidentitysurf getting ready for our grand opening on the 25th of October
Music you listen to the most at the moment?
I'm listening to Carlton Livingston as I type this interview, some roots reggae, but i like all genre's, i usually just let pandora play to what ever mood is right.
Thanks a lot Spencer and good luck for Hidentity!
Thanks to my Sponsors Manta Bodyboards, Denzien (@denziensurf) and Hidentity Surf!!!
